Canada routs Nicaragua, reaches U-20s quarterfinals

Caleb Clarke bagged a brace to lead Canada to a 5-1 Group B victory over Nicaragua and into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico on Friday night.
The Canadians (1-0-1, three points) will take on the United States in Tuesday night?s quarterfinals. The winner of that match will clinch a berth at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey later this year. Nicaragua (0-2-0, none) was eliminated.
?It will be a special match as part of the Canada-USA rivalry,? Canada coach Nick Dasovic said. ?I?m sure they will be up for it just as much as we are.?
Canada grabbed a 3-0 first-half advantage and never looked back at the Estadio Univeristario BUAP .
Samuel Piette gave the Maple Leaf via a 25-yard strike in the sixth minute before Clarke doubled the lead in the 27th minute. Mauro Eustaquio converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute.

Talk of peace with Pakistan Taliban angers victims
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Hazratullah Khan, who lost his right leg below the knee in a car bombing, answers immediately when asked whether the Pakistani government should hold peace talks with Taliban leaders responsible for attacks like the one that maimed him.
"Hang them alive," said the 14-year-old, who survived the explosion on his way home from school. "Slice the flesh off their bodies and cut them into pieces. That's what they have been doing to us."
Khan, who is from the Khyber tribal region, pondered his future recently at a physical rehabilitation center in Peshawar.
"What was my crime that they made me disabled for the rest of my life?" he asked as he touched his severed limb.
In recent weeks, the Pakistani government and Taliban forces fighting in northwestern tribal areas have expressed an interest in peace talks to end the years-long conflict. An estimated 30,000 civilians and 4,000 soldiers have died in terrorist attacks in Pakistan since Sept. 11, 2001 ? many at the hands of the Pakistani Taliban.
To many victims of Taliban violence, the idea of negotiating with people responsible for so much human pain is abhorrent. Their voices, however, are rarely heard in Pakistan, a country where people have long been conflicted about whether the Taliban are enemies bent on destroying the state or fellow Muslims who should be welcomed back into the fold after years of fighting.
The Associated Press spoke with victims of terrorist attacks in Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and the tribal areas and their families to find out how they felt about negotiating peace with the Taliban.
Khan's classmate, Fatimeen Afridi, who was also injured in the same bombing in Khyber, said he would be happy to see negotiations with the militants ? but only after those who maimed him were punished. Afridi's left leg was amputated below the knee, shattering his dream of becoming a fast bowler on Pakistan's cricket team.
"If I find them, I will throw them in a burning clay oven," he said.
The push for peace talks gained momentum in December when the leader of the Pakistani Taliban offered to negotiate. The government responded positively, and even hinted that the militants would not need to lay down their weapons before talks could begin. That would be a reversal of the government's long-held position that any talks be preceded by a ceasefire.
So far, there have been few concrete developments, and it's unclear whether Pakistan's powerful military supports negotiations.
Skeptics doubt the militants truly want peace and point to past agreements with the Taliban that fell apart after giving militants time to regroup. Others say negotiations are the only option since numerous military operations against the Taliban have failed.
The biggest question ? especially for many of the Taliban's victims ? is whether the Taliban will have to pay any price for the people they are believed to have killed and wounded. The government hasn't said whether it would offer the Taliban amnesty for past offenses.
Many of the victims feel forgotten, saying no one has asked their opinion about holding peace talks. They have to fight for what little health care they can obtain, and there's almost no assistance for dealing with psychological trauma caused by the attacks.
Dr. Mahboob-ur-Rehman runs a private medical complex in Peshawar, a large facility that houses a prosthetic workshop and a therapy school, where both Khan and Afridi are being treated. Rehman said the Pakistani army has a state-of-the-art facility to treat its soldiers while there is little help for civilians. He estimated that roughly 10,000 civilians have been permanently disabled after losing limbs in Pakistani Taliban attacks.
In the southern city of Karachi, 12-year-old Mehzar Fatima was shot in the back when a gunman killed her father, a Shiite Muslim. The sectarian groups often accused of carrying out such attacks are closely aligned with the Pakistani Taliban. The gunshot left her unable to move her legs and feet and she fears she might never use them again.
Her mother, Kishwar Fatima, said she's being pressured to leave the hospital where the girl is being treated because there's no government assistance to help pay her bills.
Those wounded in the violence feel further victimized because many Pakistanis don't even agree on who is to blame for their suffering.
Despite the huge loss of life and property, the views of many Pakistanis are influenced by right-wing, anti-American propaganda that spawns conspiracy theories about the terrorist attacks. Fellow Muslims could never commit acts of violence against their own people, they say, so someone else must be to blame. Some theories suggest U.S. and Indian intelligence agencies support the Taliban and other militant groups to destabilize Pakistan.
Some people who support the militants think the Taliban are better than many of Pakistan's corrupt politicians who have failed to deliver good governance. Many Pakistanis also say the militant problems in the tribal areas are a result of the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan and when the U.S. leaves, the Pakistani Taliban will also stop fighting.
Even some of the victims aren't sure who is to blame.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for a Feb. 2 suicide attack that killed 23 people in the northwestern city of Lakki Marwat. But Mohammad Shafi, whose 24-year-old son was among nine soldiers killed in the explosion, isn't convinced the attackers were members of the Taliban. He says Muslims would never hurt a fellow Muslim.
Instead, Shafi thinks his son ? a boxer who never lost a fight before he was shot seven times during the attack on an army post ? was killed by Hindu agents that archrival India sent, with U.S. assistance, to destabilize Pakistan. He said Pakistan should sever ties with the U.S. to abolish terrorism.
"If my son was killed by infidels, he has been martyred and will go to heaven," he said.
Confusion over who is responsible for the deadly violence also has some victims wondering if the Pakistani government makes peace with the Taliban, will it also make peace with other militant groups.
Will the government, for instance, hold talks with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a group linked to al-Qaida that is accused of killing more than 175 Shiite Muslims during the past two months in the southwestern city of Quetta?
Ghazanfar Ali lost his 24-year-old son in one of these attacks on Jan. 10 in Quetta. Another of his sons survived the same attack after three major surgeries.
Ali broke down in tears as he recalled sifting through rubble and identifying his son's body by the ring he had on his finger because his head and face were wounded beyond recognition.
"There can't be peace with the Taliban," he said. "They slaughter a son in front of his father and then chant 'God is great!'"

More than 200 kidnapped Syrian villagers released
BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen from rival Sunni and Shiite Muslim villages in northern Syria have freed more than 200 people snatched in tit-for-tat kidnappings this month, easing tensions that threatened to touch off sectarian violence, activists said Friday.
In Syria's largest city of Aleppo, three explosions that appeared to be caused by missiles killed at least 14 people, activists said, adding that dozens of people were feared to be trapped under the rubble of damaged buildings.
The wave of abductions in a rural part of the Idlib province has highlighted how much the civil war between the regime of President Bashar Assad and the hundreds of rebel groups seeking his ouster has enflamed tensions between Syria's myriad of religious groups.
The Syrian regime, established more than four decades ago by Assad's father, Hafez, has largely stocked the upper ranks of the country's security agencies and armed forces with members of the ruling family's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Most of the rebels fighting Assad's forces are poor, rural members of Syria's Sunni majority. Other religious minority communities, like Christians and Druze, have largely remained on the sidelines.
As the conflict approaches its third year, its sectarian nature is worsening. This month, clashes broke out between Sunni and Shiite villages in the area of Qusair, near the Lebanese border. Islamic extremists who have joined the rebels have destroyed Christian liquor stores, and sometimes refer to their dead adversaries with derogatory names insulting their sects.
The Idlib kidnappings showed how quickly sectarian tensions can escalate, but also that local communities are still capable of pulling back from the brink.
Opposition activists say the abductions began Feb. 14 when a bus carrying dozens of Shiite civilians, mostly women and children, disappeared on the road to Damascus. Gunmen from the area's two Shiite villages, Fua and Kifarya, responded by snatching civilians from the Sunni villages nearby.
Some of the Sunnis were nabbed at makeshift checkpoints on rural roads, while others were taken while entering the provincial capital, which government troops still control. Many of the Sunnis captives, too, were woman and children.
"They started taking over buses from the opposition villages that were heading to Idlib city," said activist Hamza Abu al-Hassan from the village of Binnish. "Some of them had government jobs or had to file papers or were just going to visit their families."
The total number of those kidnapped remains unclear. Abu al-Hassan said they included about 35 Shiites and more than 250 Sunnis. Other activists gave higher numbers.
It also remains unclear who hijacked the bus. Local activists said no rebels claimed responsibility, possibly because the kidnappers were criminals seeking ransom or because the move was immediately criticized by opposition groups.
Local rebels threatened to storm the Shiite villages, whose residents they say have been armed by the government. But the crisis was resolved early Thursday when the Shiite captives returned home, followed by the release of the Sunni captives later in the day, activists said.
Residents of the Shiite villages could not be reached for comment, though a Facebook page for the larger of the villages, Fua, said in a post Thursday that the captives had returned.
"With God's help we have liberated our kidnapped sisters from hands of the enemies of God," the post said. It also called for "retribution."
Although the abductees have all been freed, the fundamental divide between the Sunni and Shiite villages remains.
"There will have to be a battle in the future because the army is there," Ismael Khatib, a rebel from the village of Taftanaz, said via Skype. "They have tanks there that shell us, so it is natural that the rebels will liberate the area to stop the shelling."
The explosions Friday in Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial capital, hit the eastern neighborhoods of Ard al-Hamra and Tariq al-Bab, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group said.
The Observatory said at least 14 people were killed, dozens wounded and many more were believed trapped under the debris.
The Aleppo Media Center activist group put the death toll at 16.
Videos posted online showed what appeared to be the aftermath of the explosions.
In one video that the caption said was from Ard al-Hamra, dozens of people, many of them with flashlights, scour the rubble in the dark in search of survivors. In another clip, at least nine bodies are laid out on a floor, some of them wrapped in blankets.
The videos appeared authentic and corresponded to other AP reporting.
In Cairo, the Syrian National Coalition, an opposition umbrella group, said it would welcome U.S. and Russian mediation to negotiate a peace deal to end the country's civil wall but insisted it would not allow Assad or members of his security services to participate in the talks. The announcement came in a statement posted on the coalition's Facebook page following two days of meetings in Cairo meant to firm up the group's position on whether to engage in talks.
"Bashar Assad and the security and military leadership responsible for the state of Syria today must step down and be considered outside this political process," the statement said. "They cannot be part of any political solution for Syria and must be held accountable for their crimes."
Coalition chief Mouaz al-Khatib has angered some in the opposition by offering to sit down with regime figures to help end the civil war. Friday's announcement appeared aimed at setting the boundaries for any future talks by stressing that Assad and his aides cannot be part of any negotiations.
Also Friday, Reporters Without Borders said a French freelance photographer was seriously wounded a day earlier in Idlib province.
The media watchdog identified the photographer as Olivier Voisin and said he sustained shrapnel wounds to his head and arm. He was taken to a hospital in Antakya, Turkey, for surgery and was in critical but stable condition, the group said.
Hospital officials in Turkey confirmed that Voisin was in the country for treatment. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the U.N. on Friday to require Syrian authorities to grant international monitors access to its detention facilities, following the death of a peace activist in custody.
Omar Aziz, 64, died on Feb. 16 of health complications at a military hospital, the group said in a statement. It went on to describe how a newly released detainee also reported witnessing the death of Ayham Ghazzoul, an imprisoned 26-year-old rights activist. Both had been detained by security forces in November.
Human rights groups and the opposition accuse Syrian authorities of holding tens of thousands of prisoners, many of whom it is feared have been tortured.

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Dead mice laced with painkillers are about to rain down on Guam's jungle canopy. They are scientists' prescription for a headache that has caused the tiny U.S. territory misery for more than 60 years: the brown tree snake.
Most of Guam's native bird species are extinct because of the snake, which reached the island's thick jungles by hitching rides from the South Pacific on U.S. military ships shortly after World War II.
There may be 2 million of the reptiles on Guam now, decimating wildlife, biting residents and even knocking out electricity by slithering onto power lines.
More than 3,000 miles away, environmental officials in Hawaii have long feared a similar invasion ? which in their case likely would be a "snakes on a plane" scenario.
That would cost the state many vulnerable species and billions of dollars, but the risk will fall if Guam's airdrop strategy succeeds.
"We are taking this to a new phase," said Daniel Vice, assistant state director of U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services in Hawaii, Guam, and the Pacific Islands. "There really is no other place in the world with a snake problem like Guam."
Brown tree snakes are generally a few feet long but can grow to be more than 10 feet in length.
Defenseless birds
Most of Guam's native birds were defenseless against the nocturnal, tree-based predators, and within a few decades of the reptile's arrival, nearly all of them were wiped out.
The snakes can also climb power poles and wires, causing blackouts, or slither into homes and bite people, including babies.
They use venom on their prey, but it is not lethal to humans.
The infestation and the toll it has taken on native wildlife have tarnished Guam's image as a tourism haven, though the snakes are rarely seen outside their jungle habitat.
The solution to this headache, fittingly enough, is acetaminophen, the active ingredient in painkillers including Tylenol.
The strategy takes advantage of the snake's two big weaknesses. Unlike most snakes, brown tree snakes are happy to eat prey they didn't kill themselves, and they are highly vulnerable to acetaminophen, which is harmless to humans.
The upcoming mice drop is targeted to hit snakes near Guam's sprawling Andersen Air Force Base, which is surrounded by heavy foliage and if compromised would offer the snakes a potential ticket off the island. Using helicopters, the dead neonatal mice will be dropped by hand, one by one.
U.S. government scientists have been perfecting the mice-drop strategy for more than a decade with support from the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior.
Streamers
To keep the mice bait from dropping all the way to the ground, where it could be eaten by other animals or attract insects as they rot, researchers have developed a device with streamers designed to catch in the branches of the forest foliage, where the snakes live and feed.
Experts say the impact on other species will be minimal, particularly since the snakes have themselves wiped out the birds that might have been most at risk.
"One concern was that crows may eat mice with the toxicant," said William Pitt, of the U.S. National Wildlife Research Center's Hawaii Field Station. "However, there are no longer wild crows on Guam."
The mouse drop is set to start in April or May.
A 2010 study conducted by the National Wildlife Research Center found brown tree snakes would cause between $593 million and $2.14 billion in economic damage each year if they became established in Hawaii like they are on Guam.
Power outages would cause the most damage, followed by a projected decline in tourism. The cost of treating snake bites would account for a small share.
Native Hawaiian birds "literally don't know what to do when they see a snake coming," said Christy Martin, a spokeswoman for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species, a partnership of Hawaii government agencies and private organizations.
"Once we get snakes here, we're never going to be able to fix the situation," Martin said.?

The future Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Singapore was ordained on Friday evening in a ceremony attended by more than 14,000 political dignitaries, religious leaders, and Catholics from Singapore and around the region.
Father William Goh was ordained as the Archbishop Coadjutor of Singapore, meaning he will now be the deputy to Archbishop Nicholas Chia. He will also take over the top post in the local church - made up of around 303,000 Catholics - when the latter retires.
Friday's ceremony at the Singapore Expo was presided over by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, the Vatican envoy - or Apostolic Nuncio - to Singapore. He was assisted by Archbishop Chia and Archbishop Murphy Pakiam from Kuala Lumpur.
The ordination was also attended by President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon and Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

Kate Upton Nearly Lost Hearing And Eyesight After Antarctic Swimsuit Shoot For Sports Illustrated
Kate Upton nearly froze to death while shooting her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue feature in Antarctica in sub-zero temperatures.
The voluptuous model pranced around the icy continent in little more than a bikini, posing with penguins and in snowy landscapes.
During her appearance to promote the new issue on The Today Show earlier this week, Upton explained that despite the cold temperatures, it was worth it.
"It was freezing, I'm from florida so it wasn't great for me," she says. "Obviously, the pictures now -- it's incredible. I can't believe we were all able to accomplish that."
The model also said she suffered from frostbite after returning from the shoot; which took three years to plan, according to People magazine.
"When I came back, I was losing hearing and eyesight because my body was shutting down, it was working so hard to keep me warm," she said.
"[The shoot] was difficult," SI editor MJ Day explained to People. "First of all, it's cold, even though we were there in summer. The windchill was sub-zero ? the elements are really working against you."
He also says that Upton was very professional about the shoot, despite the harsh conditions.
"She never complained," he says. "She'd just say, 'Okay, let's go do it again.'"
Upton was more surprised when she found out where she'd be shooting than when she found out she made her second cover in a row when the news leaked on Twitter last Friday.
"It was an accomplishment just to get through the shoot?I didn't even think about the possibility of being the cover until after I thawed out a bit!"
The buxom blonde is the first model to land back-to-back covers since Tyra Banks did it in 1996 (co-covered with Valeria Mazza) and 1997 and Elle MacPherson landed three in a row from 1986-88.
"Sports Illustrated really launched my career," Upton says. "I have a lot to thank them for."

Indian plant could play key role in death of cancer cells
Feb. 14, 2013 ? Scientists at the Georgia Regents University Cancer Center have identified an Indian plant, used for centuries to treat inflammation, fever and malaria, that could help kill cancer cells.
Cancer cells typically avoid death by hijacking molecular chaperones that guide and protect the proteins that ensure normal cellular function and then tricking them into helping mutated versions of those proteins stay alive, says Dr. Ahmed Chadli, a researcher in the Molecular Chaperone Program at the GRU Cancer Center and senior author of the study named the Journal of Biological Chemistry's Paper of the Week.
Drug development has focused on the chaperone Hsp90 (heat shock protein 90) because it plays a key role in assisting mutated proteins, making it an attractive cancer drug target. However, the clinical efficacy of Hsp90 inhibitors has been disappointing. Most current small molecules targeting Hsp90 have inadvertently resulted in the expression of proteins that protect cancer cells from programmed cell death and compromise the Hsp90 inhibitors in the clinic.
In this study, however, Chaitanya Patwardhan, a graduate student in Dr. Chadli's lab, found that gedunin, an Indian plant compound, attacks a co-chaperone, or helper protein, of Hsp90 called p23.
"This compound binds directly to p23, leading to inactivation of the Hsp90 machine -- without production of anti-apoptotic proteins -- thus killing cancer cells," said Dr. Chadli. "The idea here is that this will open a door for new ways of targeting Hsp90 by targeting its helper proteins, which may be used in combination with established Hsp90 inhibitors that are ongoing clinical trials. In the future, this research could have applications in drug development for hormone-dependent cancers, including breast, prostate and endometrial cancers."
"One of the major areas of scientific emphasis of the GRU Cancer Center is to develop therapeutic approaches to cancer targeting specific molecules within the cancer cell, including chaperones," said Dr. Samir N. Khleif, Director of the GRU Cancer Center. "This finding is an important piece of the puzzle, bringing us closer to our goal of helping patients with cancer."

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has again nominated two members of the National Labor Relations Board whose appointments last year were disputed by a federal appeals court.

On Wednesday, Obama sent to the Senate the nominations of Sharon Block and Richard Griffin, both of whom he placed on the labor board by bypassing the Senate last year.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled last month Obama violated the Constitution by using a so-called "recess appointment" to place them on the board.
Obama also re-nominated Richard Cordray as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Cordray was also a recess appointment last year.
The court ruling raised questions about the legitimacy of Cordray's appointment. Republicans, who oppose the consumer bureau, have said they would continue to block Cordray's confirmation.

Rep. Paul Ryan to Tapper: "he underplayed the enormity of the task before us, which is to confront a debt crisis"
In his first post- State of the Union Address interview, Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) spoke with CNN anchor and chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper live from the U.S. Capitol with his reaction. A full transcript of the interview is after the jump.

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR:? Florida Senator Marco Rubio delivering the official Republican response and offering a very, very different vision for the future than the president did just moments ago in his State of the Union Address, a different vision on a whole host of domestic issues, setting the scene, setting the scene potentially for some bitter partisan battles in the weeks and months to come with a lot at stake for the American people.
Jake Tapper is watching what's going on.? Jake, this was a very significant contrast we heard from Senator Rubio as opposed to the president.
JAKE TAPPER, CNN ANCHOR:? That's right.? I am actually standing here right now with the man who gave that thankless task of a speech a year ago, Congressman Paul Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, and also, of course, Mitt Romney's vice-presidential running mate.
First of all, you predicted before the speech that you feared the president would take a hard turn to the left.? Is that what you heard this evening or no?
REP. PAUL RYAN (R-WI), CHAIRMAN, BUDGET COMMITTEE:? Well, in some areas I think he was productive.? I thought on comprehensive immigration reform, I thought his words were measured.? I think the tone and the words he took were productive on that front.
He listed a laundry list of new programs that ought to be created.? He said they won't cost another dime.? The problem is we're already a trillion in the hole, he dramatically overstated the deficit reduction of his administration without counting any spending that had occurred during his administration.
So I think he underplayed they enormity of our task before us on a debt crisis, on deficit reduction, which is really threatening to our economy.? So I think what you got was kind of a traditional laundry list, I guess I would say, from a liberal perspective, of new programs and things like that, without really talking about what these will really cost and how it affects our economy.
TAPPER:? But you do - you did hear immigration reform as an area...
RYAN:? Yes, I thought that was?
TAPPER:? ? where you could move forward?
RYAN:? ? pretty productive.? I think, you know, when you have - when you are in the legislative arena and we're trying to get a comprehensive bipartisan agreement here, the words he uses matters.? And he used what I thought was a measured tone which gives me a sense that he is trying to get something done.
So he used measured words that were productive with respect to immigration.? I think that's an area where we have a good chance of getting something done.? There are clearly other areas where we have to work together.
But what I am concerned about is he underplayed the enormity of the task before us, which is to confront? a debt crisis.? He is suggesting that there is not much work to be done to reduce the deficit and get this debt under control.? And that's just not the case.? There is a lot of work to be done.
TAPPER:? There is a lot of work to be done.? He also mentioned your former running mate, Mitt Romney, or I guess he is your former - whatever.
RYAN:? I know who you are talking about.
(LAUGHTER)
TAPPER:? As supporting tying the minimum wage to cost of living.? Is that something that you could support?
RYAN:? I have never been a fan of that idea.? I think it is inflationary.? I think it actually is counterproductive in many ways.? You end up costing jobs from people who are at the bottom rung of the economic ladder.? Look, I wish we could just pass a law saying everybody should make more money without any adverse consequences.
The problem is you end up costing jobs from those who are just trying to get entry-level jobs.? The goal ought to be, is to get people out of entry-level jobs, into better jobs - better-paying jobs.? That's better education.? That's a growing economy.? Those are some of the things he talked about and I don't think raising minimum wage, and history is very clear about this, doesn't actually accomplish those goals.
TAPPER:? And one other last thing.? You've talked a lot about the insurmountable task of - well, you haven't called it an insurmountable task, but the challenge of solving the deficit problem.? Would you ever be willing to vote for a package that included some tax increases, even if it was just closing loopholes, closing some of the ones that the president talks about on the stump, you know, corporate jets and that sort of thing?
RYAN:? Well, I supported the "fiscal cliff" agreement.? That already raised revenues by about $650 billion.
TAPPER:? Right.? But I am talking about a future plan.
RYAN:? So here is the issue.? We to want make sure that we have tax reform.? He said two things.? He wants tax reform and then he said, close loopholes.? Well, closing loopholes to spend more money in Washington means you're denying the ability to do tax reform because it is from these loopholes that we do tax reform.
By closing loopholes you can lower rates and do tax reform that create jobs and can grow the economy.? That's what we're in favor of.? Lots of Democrats agree with us.? If you take those loopholes for spending, which is what I heard tonight, then you're making it virtually impossible to actually get tax reform.
So what we want, smart spending cuts, not across-the-board like he is suggesting.? We want entitlement reforms.? And we want tax reform which, of course, means closing loopholes so we can lower tax rates to get economic growth.
That's the secret of success.? That's where there is a lot of bipartisan support for, but I didn't quite hear that from the president tonight and that's a cause for concern.
TAPPER:? OK.? We're going to have to continue our discussion when you come on my new show, which is live in March.
RYAN:? I'll be happy to do so.
TAPPER:? ? now you're going to be one of the first guests.
RYAN:? I just committed.
TAPPER:? And now we're going to throw to Chris Cuomo to have more analysis of the president's State of the Union Address, and, of course, Marco Rubio, senator from Florida, his Republican response - Chris.

Sunlight stimulates release of climate-warming gas from melting arctic permafrost
Feb. 11, 2013 ? Ancient carbon trapped in Arctic permafrost is extremely sensitive to sunlight and, if exposed to the surface when long-frozen soils melt and collapse, can release climate-warming carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere much faster than previously thought.
University of Michigan ecologist and aquatic biogeochemist George Kling and his colleagues studied places in Arctic Alaska where permafrost is melting and is causing the overlying land surface to collapse, forming erosional holes and landslides and exposing long-buried soils to sunlight.
They found that sunlight increases bacterial conversion of exposed soil carbon into carbon dioxide gas by at least 40 percent compared to carbon that remains in the dark. The team, led by Rose Cory of the University of North Carolina, reported its findings in an article to be published online Feb. 11 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Until now, we didn't really know how reactive this ancient permafrost carbon would be -- whether it would be converted into heat-trapping gases quickly or not," said Kling, a professor in the U-M Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. EEB graduate student Jason Dobkowski is a co-author of the paper.
"What we can say now is that regardless of how fast the thawing of the Arctic permafrost occurs, the conversion of this soil carbon to carbon dioxide and its release into the atmosphere will be faster than we previously thought," Kling said. "That means permafrost carbon is potentially a huge factor that will help determine how fast the Earth warms."
Tremendous stores of organic carbon have been frozen in Arctic permafrost soils for thousands of years. If thawed and released as carbon dioxide gas, this vast carbon repository has the potential to double the amount of the heat-trapping greenhouse gas in the atmosphere on a timescale similar to humanity's inputs of carbon dioxide due to the burning of fossil fuels.
That creates the potential for a positive feedback: As Earth warms due to the human-caused release of heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, frozen Arctic soils also warm, thaw and release more carbon dioxide. The added carbon dioxide accelerates Earth's warming, which further accelerates the thawing of Arctic soils and the release of even more carbon dioxide. Recent climate change has increased soil temperatures in the Arctic and has thawed large areas of permafrost. Just how much permafrost will thaw in the future and how fast the carbon dioxide will be released is a topic of heated debate among climate scientists.
Already, the melting of ground ice is causing land-surface subsidence features called thermokarst failures. A thermokarst failure is generated when ice-rich, permanently frozen soils are warmed and thawed. As the ice melts, the soil collapses and either creates an erosional hole in the tundra or -- if the slope is steep enough -- a landslide.
Thermokarst failures change the trajectory of the debate on the role of the Arctic in global climate, according to Kling and his colleagues. The unanticipated outcome of the study reported in PNAS is that soil carbon will not be thawed and degraded directly in the soils. Instead, the carbon will be mixed up and exposed to sunlight as the land surface fails.
Sunlight -- and especially ultraviolet radiation, the wavelengths that cause sunburn -- can degrade the organic soil carbon directly to carbon dioxide gas, and sunlight can also alter the carbon to make it a better food for bacteria. When bacteria feed on this carbon, they respire it to carbon dioxide, much the same way that people respire carbon in food and exhale carbon dioxide as a byproduct.
"Whether UV light exposure will enhance or retard the conversion of newly exposed carbon from permafrost soils has been, until recently, anybody's guess," said University of North Carolina's Cory, the study's lead author. "In this research, we provide the first evidence that the respiration of previously frozen soil carbon will be amplified by reactions with sunlight and their effects on bacteria."
"We know that in a warmer world there will be more of these thermokarst failures, and that will lead to more of this ancient frozen carbon being exposed to surface conditions," Kling said. "While we can't say how fast this Arctic carbon will feed back into the global carbon cycle and accelerate climate warming on Earth, the fact that it will be exposed to light means that it will happen faster than we previously thought."
The researchers analyzed water from seven thermokarst failures near Toolik Lake, Alaska, as well as 27 other undisturbed sites nearby.
In addition to Cory, Kling and Dobkowski, Byron Crump of the University of Maryland was a co-author of the PNAS paper. The research was supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation.
