However, it turns out that the beetles, who work at night, need some sort of compass to prevent them from rolling around in circles. New research suggests that the insects use starlight to guide their way. Birds, seals, and humans also use starlight to navigate, but this is the first time it's been shown in an insect." Also on the topic of How Animals Get Around Without GPS, new research has considerably heightened scientists understanding of birds' sensitivity to magnetic fields. For homing pigeons at least, this ability seems to be tied to a cluster of just 53 neurons (original paper, also behind a paywall).

Western Oil Shale Could Mean Energy Independence, But Where's ...
Extracting the West oil riches requires lots and lots of water ? and the area isn?t exactly getting wetter.Locked up inside the six million years of sediment that makes up the Green River Formation, which extends across mostly public lands in Colorado and Utah, may be the equivalent of a few trillion barrels of oil. Even if only half of it is recoverable, the oil shale of the Mountain West could one day fuel the world, turning the phrase ?U.S. energy independence? from slogan to reality.
Provided, that is, that there?s a reasonable way to coax the fuel out of the rock. Trapped in fossil-fuel purgatory, oil shale has to be heated to super-high temperatures, a process called ?retorting? that requires enormous amounts of water. No one can even say for sure how much, although some energy companies try. Utah-based Red Leaf claims its technology needs only a tiny amount; other estimates say that full-scale development of oil shale in Colorado would require more water than all of Denver uses in a year.
?There?s been a great deal of speculation on water needs for oil shale, but it?s all based on unproven technology,? says Steven Hall, Colorado spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management, which recently signed a lease with ExxonMobil for an experimental oil shale project in the Piceance Basin. ?I don?t think the technologies those [low] water-use estimates are based on are commercially or environmentally feasible.?
Last November, the BLM published a fresh analysis of oil shale development?s environmental impacts on Western public lands. Much of the analysis, which also looks at tar sands in Utah, is concerned with water ? the lack of it in this arid region, the great need any energy-extraction technique has for it, and the vulnerability of freshwater aquifers to industrial contamination. As a consequence of this and other concerns, the analysis proposes reducing the two million-plus acres of public lands opened to commercial lease in 2008 to just under 700,000 acres limited to research projects.
Lawmakers including Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, warn that the BLM?s parent, the Department of Interior, stands in the way of economic progress. But not even the oil producers have figured out how to get the water to the rock without incurring huge energy costs ? costs that may not pencil out in the final analysis. In other words, it may take more energy to get the water to the oil shale than anyone can actually extract from it.
This problem with the embryonic industry is what regulators and industry experts call an ?energy-water nexus? issue: Just as water needs energy to travel from source to tap, nearly every form of energy needs water throughout its lifecycle, from mining to generation to reclamation. Most of the country?s electricity, for example, comes from coal, gas, or nuclear plants that heat water until it flashes to steam and spins a turbine; that steam then has to be cooled back into water ? using yet more water. Biofuels use water, from cultivation to distillation, and some forms of geothermal production consume as much as 800 gallons per megawatt-hour of electricity, the amount of power the average home uses in a month.
Energy, says the Congressional Research Service, outpaces municipal use in its water demands; it?s second only to agriculture. And while farms and cities have begun to conserve water, energy ? thanks to biofuels and shale gas ? is increasingly voracious. Nor is consumption the only issue: Electricity plants return almost all that cooling water to the source, but they return it at a higher temperature, altering riparian or marine ecosystems.
The Government Accountability Office has published five reports over the last three years on energy-water nexus issues, analyzing oil shale?s water needs, the interdependency between electrical plants and their water supplies, and the hydrologic impacts of hydraulic fracturing. But the GAO?s sixth and latest report, published in September, argues that the most crucial component of the nexus is information sharing ? between state and local governments, industry and science, and even across federal agencies.
?People have been aware of these issues from their individual viewpoints at various agencies,? says Frank Rusco, the GAO?s director of water and energy issues. The Energy Department might understand that hydrofracturing for natural gas could contaminate local water supplies, for instance, but the Environmental Protection Agency may lack baseline studies showing the water?s condition before industry got there. Interior officials might suspect that developing oil shale in Colorado could exhaust local water supplies, but not have accurate data to prove it. In 2003, the U.S. Geological Survey told GAO investigators that it had not shared data on freshwater supplies with other federal agencies in more than three years ? not that anyone had asked.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 ?highlighted the need for agencies to do more coordinating and think in a more strategic way?about energy and water policy issues,? Rusco said, so Congress directed the Energy Department to set up an agency devoted to the energy-water nexus. Yet while some coordination has begun ? the Environmental Protection Agency and the Energy Department, for instance, have initiated a program to protect groundwater from energy development ? a dedicated energy-water agency still exists only on paper.
?Agencies have competing agendas,? Rusco says. ?Coordinating strategies across several agencies is a difficult thing to accomplish.? It?s also expensive: Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, who commissioned the latest GAO report, has authored two bills that would promote agency coordination when energy affects water and vice versa, one calling for $300 million to fund the effort.
Neither is likely to pass in the deficit-obsessed Congress, for which tasks such as monitoring the country?s supply of freshwater seems to be a luxury. Last fall, House Natural Resources Subcommittee Chairman Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., asked USGS Director Marcia McNutt why the agency supports energy program cuts but asks for increases in climate change research funding. He then read her a list of current gas prices. Congress is unlikely, then, to allocate the funds needed for USGS to maintain its vast nationwide network of stream gauges, no matter how much better data on water, climate, and drought might matter to the future of unconventional oil and gas.
?People may not fully grasp the scale of the increase in energy development,? Rusco says, especially when it comes to thirsty processes like hydraulic fracturing and oil shale. ?The intensity of it and the amount of water it uses is unprecedented.? And, unfortunately, still somewhat unknown.

Video shows plane struck by lightning, passengers? ho-hum reactions
What's scarier?being in an airplane struck by lightning or being in an airplane stuck by lightning and finding yourself surrounded by people who aren't freaking out?

We tend to go with the latter, and we cite the above video as proof. The U.K.'s Telegraph reports that a passenger named Bertan Atay recorded a short clip of the passengers aboard his Turkish Airline flight after an engine caught fire. The Telegraph says the "video captures the panic and confusion" of the moment, but we'd have to disagree. Everyone appears oddly calm, like the site of an engine fire wasn't cause for concern.

The passengers do allow themselves to murmur a bit once the lights go out, but that's about as panicked as they seem to get. And, fortunately, everything turned out OK. The pilot declared an emergency and brought the plane down to safety. No one was hurt.

Keeping busy is the secret to a healthy life and happy marriage, Wanaka couple Bill and Marjorie Durry say.The pair - both in their early 80s and still working as motel owner-operators - celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary today, and are certain their active lifestyles and shared love of sport, travel and people has helped them reach the marital milestone.
''We were never idle. In fact, we believe to keep well is to be busily involved with body and mind,'' Mrs Durry said.
They first met as teenagers in Dunedin when Mr Durry - an apprentice carpenter at the time - was altering the building where Mrs Durry (nee Pybus) was working as an office girl.
''She said she would meet me at a St John's dance and I went there with some football guys,'' said Mr Durry, a former Otago Colts player.
Encouraged by their mutual interest in sport, they went on to enjoy a ''platonic friendship'' for six years, Mrs Durry said.
During that time, her future husband worked hard at restoring her family's home, which had fallen into disrepair after her father died when she was in her early teens. Eventually, their relationship developed into something more and the pair got engaged, then were married on January 24, 1953, at St Martin's Church in Northeast Valley.
''I've never had another girlfriend, ever. She's had plenty of boyfriends,'' Mr Durry said with a chuckle.
The couple's long association with Wanaka was sparked in 1948 when 17-year-old Mr Durry helped members of the Otago Alpine Club build Aspiring Hut. In 1962, as a self-employed builder, he built four holiday homes in Wanaka. He subsequently built the family's holiday home there before taking on a more ambitious project - constructing the Panorama Court accommodation complex on Lakeside Rd, which the couple opened in 1969 and is still operating. After running the property for 24 years, they sold it and Mr Durry, a former Lake
County councillor, built the neighbouring Durry Hills Motel which opened in 2000 with ''a view to die for'' over Lake Wanaka, and is still run by the couple today. They have no intention of retiring, as being motel hosts brings endless opportunities to meet ''terrifically interesting people'' from all over the world.
The couple have two children - son David, who helps out at the motel after recently returning from England, and daughter Jayne, who lives in Australia - and one grandchild.
Despite being ''workaholics'', their lives have not been all work and no play. They have both been successful in their respective sports over the years and have travelled together extensively. They still regularly play golf in Wanaka, and close the motel for several months every winter to escape to Australia, where they own a house overlooking a golf course.
They are celebrating their anniversary in Nelson with their extended family.

"Les Miserables" soundtrack tops UK albums chart
LONDON (Reuters) - The soundtrack of the Oscar-nominated movie "Les Miserables" climbed to the top spot in the UK albums chart, the first film cast recording to do so since Madonna's "Evita" in 1997, the Official Charts Company said on Sunday.
A film version of a hugely successful stage musical based on a novel by 19th century French writer Victor Hugo, "Les Miserables" has already picked up a Golden Globe award for best movie musical, and is nominated for a best picture Oscar.
The recording of songs performed by the actors in the movie, including Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, had entered the UK albums chart in fifth position a week ago. It knocked Emeli Sande's "Our Version Of Events" off the top spot.
Hathaway, who plays a character called Fantine, also had the 22nd spot in the singles chart with her performance of "I Dreamed A Dream", one of the most popular songs from the musical.
At the very top of the singles chart, U.S. producer will.i.am's collaboration with Britney Spears, "Scream & Shout", held onto the number one ranking, fending off stiff competition from new entrants 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake.
U.S. rapper 50 Cent's new release, "My Life", featuring Eminem and Maroon 5's Adam Levine, came in at number two while Timberlake, the former 'N Sync star, nabbed the number three spot with his "Suit and Tie" featuring Jay-Z.

The Spiritual Connectedness of Schizophrenia | this time - this space

Dealing with schizophrenia will put anyone who is diagnosed with the disorder on a long road to learning more about psychology, medication and themselves.? I speak from experience when I say that although being diagnosed as schizophrenic can feel like a prison sentence, it can also be one of the most freeing experiences of your life. You are given license to contemplate how and why your mind performs the way it does, as well as the information necessary to have a greater understanding of your disorder. While the symptoms of schizophrenia are sometimes frightening manifestations, they can also be key to understanding and embracing your deepest spiritual self.
Schizophrenia, literally meaning split mind, can manifest in a variety of different ways. Some of the most common symptoms of the disorder are disorganized thoughts, paranoia and auditory hallucinations. I have experienced all of these things. One of my greatest struggles in dealing with schizophrenia was the need to find peace despite the unrelenting idea that something terrible was about to happen. In order to do that, I had to confront my paranoid thoughts and fears, even the irrational ones. I had to come to understand that some of the fears I was experiencing were pathological and rooted in childhood abuse. By understanding the triggers of those irrational and paranoid fears, I developed a coping mechanism that helped me to self-correct when I was having an episode.
As a result of delving into my own psychological makeup and emotional history, I have developed a deeper understanding of the meaning and significance of the field of psychology. I suffered with schizophrenia for two years without seeking help, but now that I have, I have a great sense of respect and compassion for myself. I no longer taunt myself or make myself feel guilty for what I can or cannot accomplish on any given day. I extend that respect to other people, both those who suffer from mental disorders and those who do not. I understand that everyone faces their own challenges and fears, and that no one deserves to feel belittled or inferior because of what they can or cannot manage.
Before I had a deeper understanding of myself, I rejected the idea of spirituality, thinking that no intervening God could allow bad things to happen to me, or allow me to be as sick as I was. After experiencing schizophrenia and studying the many books that are sympathetic to this illness, I don?t feel that way any more. I have come to embrace the spirituality that comes from the interconnectedness of all of us, the fact that each of us carry our own unique burdens and still find a way to love one another. When I am given the opportunity to make a choice that will affect myself or someone else, I try to make the choice that will inherently lead to the most good for everyone. I try to be unselfish, kind, respectful and decent, as my understanding of spirituality is that compassion and goodness are the most powerful things we can put into the universe- and they will come back to us. I don?t claim to understand religion or have the ability to solve the eternal mysteries, I just know that doing good things leads to a cycle of good things, and that?s the most deeply spiritual and loving thing that anyone can do for the world.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Former Penn State President Graham Spanier attended the school's men's basketball game against Nebraska on Saturday, sitting in the front row at what is believed to be his first Penn State sporting event since he was fired in November 2011.
Spanier and two other high-ranking administrators face charges including perjury and obstruction for allegedly covering up sex abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. All three are awaiting a preliminary hearing and have maintained their innocence.
Spanier was ousted along with Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno in the immediate aftermath of Sandusky's November 2011 arrest. A university-sanctioned investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh accused Spanier and Paterno of participating in a cover-up to protect the school's image.
Paterno died almost a year ago. His family has firmly denied the allegations of a cover-up.

58 New APIs: USGS, Text Marketing and Tablet Publishing
This week we had 58 new APIs added to our API directory including a contour mapping service, text marketing service, mobile and tablet publishing and content service, telecom information applications and airport flight connection instruction service. In addition we covered an API to embed maps in your applications. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
Adform API: The service provides integrated advertising functionality for applications across Europe. Functions include serving ad images, media, and other content along with media campaign planning, traffic management and media buys, and campaign reporting. Features include customizable dynamic advertising with personalization targeting messages to user groups and interactive bidding to obtain desirable ad display slots.
API methods support creating and updating advertising campaign listings with reporting of clickthrough rates and other performance statistics. Methods also support tracking of users and media displays to allow placement services with personalized delivery of relevant messages. The API manages delivery of ad media as selected by placement methods.
Anniversarator API: The service provides an "anniversary calculator" that suggests reasons to celebrate wedding or relationship anniversaries and birthdays. Input must specify a start date and the event type, either birthday or anniversary (the default). The service returns a suggestion for a reason to celebrate based on the time elapsed since the start date.
API methods generate text suggestions based on the number of days, weeks, fortnights (2-week periods), months or years since the specified start date. Optional annotations explain potentially obscure references in the suggestions.
bubblebox:mailer API: The service provides blast email service for promotional campaigns and other large-group communications. Its online tools allow creation of rich HTML message body without hand-coding along with management of address lists and handling of interactions with recipients. Reporting functions provide feedback on campaign success and communication effectiveness.
API methods automate some common tasks within the system for efficiency and prevention of common errors. Methods include address list management with upload functions and deduplication, designation of message body text and other content, and scheduling delivery. Methods also handle opt-out requests and other responses from recipients, with reporting of these interactions as well as delivery success rates, link clickthrough rates, and other performance measures.
bytehand API: Bytehand SMS is a Russian system for sending SMS in bulk. Users can watch their messages being sent, correct their campaigns, and analyze the results from anywhere, simply by logging onto their personal account from any device with internet access. Bytehand's services are available directly through the website or programmatically through its RESTful API. The bytehand website is provided in Russian, but most of it is also available in English.
BYU Academic API: The service provides support for courses taught at Brigham Young University. It allows creation and updating of course records with links to the university curriculum inventory of all courses and student registration records. The service allows for control of coursework and student performance across the BYU academic calendar.
API methods support definition and updating of course sections linked to listing from the curriculum inventory, with offering dates and times, student registration rolls, and other class schedule variables. Methods also allow updating of the official curriculum listings with official title and grading rules, records of student course performance and academic status, and dates from the BYU academic calendar.
BYU Email Verification API: The service validates email addresses under the internet domains used by Brigham Young University. It accepts a character string as input which it compares against records for the buy.edu and byu.net domains. The system response either confirms that the address string submitted is associated with a BYU user account or an error message that the address is not recognized.
API methods check whether a submitted string identifies a properly formatted email address in domains managed by BYU. It then checks the specific address against the university's login databases to confirm whether it is registered for a user account there or whether it forwards to a valid BYU address.
BYU Entrance Exams API: The service provides access to scores on placement exams reported to Brigham Young University on behalf of students applying for admission and to course credits awarded on the basis of those scores. Exam scores cover testing programs such as Advance Placement (AP), College Level Entrance Placement (CLEP), and others. Data is retained within the the university's student information application under substantial confidentiality requirements mandated by the U.S. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
API methods support retrieval of placement exam scores for a student based on a request identifying the correct student ID value. Separate methods cover entrance exam scores and credits awarded on the basis of the scores.
Centzy API: Centzy is a service that displays prices, hours, and ratings for services by location. Users can search for a variety of services such as hair stylists, tailors, and auto repair in cities in the United States.
The Centzy API allows developers to access and integrate the functionality of Centzy with other applications and to create new applications. Public documentation is not available; interested developers should sign up for more information here: http://centzy.com/.
Charlotte City Club Photo Album API: The Charlotte City Club ? located in Charlotte, NC ? provides social and business event hosting services to its members. Members may set up their own events or attend events held by the Club itself. The Charlotte City Club website provides a photo album, which is not available to the general public. The Photo Album API enables users to load all or some of the images from the photo album onto their own websites. This API is accessible via SOAP calls issued in XML format.
China Telecom API: China Telecom is a state owned telecom operator in China servicing over 600 thousand customers. China Telecom transitioned to promote the development of information applications, specifically for enterprise use, to bring new ways for the public and enterprise to access and use information. The China Telecom API requires developers to first apply for access, then go through an application process for their application idea to be approved. Once approved, developers can then create their application for enterprise and public use. The goal being to spread technology and information into the rural parts of China.

The service is expected to save time and expense by streamlining the process of verifying that licensees and registrants meet CPE requirements and by providing a centralized repository for pharmacists? and pharmacy technicians? continuing education details. The CPE Monitor Service API permits direct programmatic interaction with CPE Monitor. With it, users can add, edit, and remove CPE information programmatically via SOAP calls.

Iron.io IronCache API: IronCache is an elastic cache and key/value data storage system. It was designed to share states, pass data, and coordinate activity between processes and devices. IronCache provides persistent, backed up, long-term storage along with flexible TTL (Time-to-Live), meaning that items can be set to expire at specific times or persist permanently in the cache.
IronCache offers an HTTP (REST) interface through which users can connect to IronCache endpoints for storing and retrieving data items. KnpBundles API: KnpBundles is a repository of bundles for Symfony2, a PHP framework for web projects. MaConDa API: The service provides access to the Mass spectrometry Contaminant Database which aggregates research reports for chemical composition of environmental contaminant molecules. Contaminant records are annotated with metadata describing compounds.

If desired, the user may also choose the contour interval and units and a name for the resulting shapefile. The generated files are packaged in one zipfile and placed on the USGS webserver where they are publicly available. This service returns a URL that can be used to obtain the finished file.
W3 Solutions API: W3 Solutions is an all-in-one integrated management solution for extended warranty programs. They offer plans covering a variety of products that include appliances, consumer electronics, mobility products, furniture, and computers. Contracts can be registered online either manually or through batch uploads, and customers can file their claims online.
