Bass smashed in Nirvana video could fetch $40K

By Rolling Stone

The bass that Krist Novoselic played and Kurt Cobain smashed in the video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?will be up for auction by Christie's in London on Nov. 29.

The seller of the 1960s Japanese Zen-On bass was a teenager at the time of the video's shoot; he had applied to be an extra, and grabbed the bass from the set.

Knowing the bass would be destroyed, Novoselic sought an inexpensive piece of gear, and purchased the bass at a local pawn shop. The instrument is expected to fetch between $24,000 and more than $40,000.

No more tears from tears

Commercial medical tapes on the market today are great at keeping medical devices attached to the skin, but often can do damage?such as skin tissue tearing?once it's time to remove them.

A research team from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) has invented a quick-release tape that has the strong adhesion properties of commercial medical tape, but without the ouch factor upon removal.

The team was led by Jeffrey Karp, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, senior study author in collaboration with The Institute for Pediatric Innovation which defined the need and requirements for a new neonatal adhesive based on national surveys of neonatal clinicians.

The study detailing the tape design will be electronically published on October 29, 2012 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was conducted in collaboration with Robert Langer, PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The tape which achieves strong adhesion when securing medical devices to skin, but could also easily peel off safely, utilizes a three-layer design approach that sets a new paradigm for quick-release medical tapes.

"Current adhesive tapes that contain backing and adhesive layers are tailored to fracture at the adhesive-skin interface. With adults the adhesive fails leaving small remnants of adhesive on the skin while with fragile neonate skin, the fracture is more likely to occur in the skin causing significant damage," said Karp. "Our approach transitions the fracture zone away from the skin to the adhesive-backing interface thus completely preventing any harm during removal."

The approach incorporates an anisotropic adhesive interface between the backing and adhesive layers. The anisotropic properties of this middle layer means that it has different physical properties dependent on direction. For instance, take wood, which is stronger along the grain than across it.

The researchers employed laser etching and a release liner to create the anisotropic interface resulting in a medical tape with high shear strength (for strong adhesion) and low peel force (for safe, quick removal). Once the backing is peeled off, any remaining adhesive left on the skin can safely be rolled off with a finger using a "push and roll" technique.

"This is one of the biggest problems faced in the neonate units, where the patients are helpless and repeatedly wrapped in medical tapes designed for adult skin," said Bryan Laulicht, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, lead study author.

There are more than 1.5 million injuries each year in the United States caused by medical tape removal. Such injuries in babies and the elderly?populations with fragile skin?can range from skin irritation to permanent scarring.

Solid waste bylaw targets junk mail | Te Waha Nui

?

Hundreds of millions of kilograms of junk mail are delivered to households in New Zealand each year.

?

A huge amount of the advertising mail is thrown away without a look, and even when it is recycled it?s all going to end up in the landfill eventually.

?

Auckland Council is establishing one solid waste bylaw to replace the bylaws of the city?s seven former councils.

?

Part of the plan is the new littering bylaw which says only official agencies can post unaddressed mail to letter boxes marked ?no circulars?, ?no junk mail?, and the like.

?

Statistics New Zealand estimates households get more than 116,000,000kg of junk mail delivered each year.

?

In 2006 a Christchurch man collected a 70kg, 1.71m stack of unaddressed mail, the majority being advertising from home improvement and electrical stores.

?

Waitakere Refuse and Recycling Centre?s waste contract co-ordinator Jan Eckersley says junk mail gets stuffed into letter boxes already full of junk mail.

?

?It drops out of letter boxes and is found lying on the street and it blocks drains.

?

?The litter?s a big issue with junk mail, I think the last time we did a litter survey it comprised 16 per cent of litter items.?

?

Operations leader at the Waitakere Refuse and Recycling Centre Laurie Blair says he sees a lot more people recycling junk mail.

?

?I use myself as an example . . . I?ve got my recycle bin and I usually go straight from the mail box to the recycling bin.?

?

But Eckersley says junk mail does not always get recycled.

?

?Some people will just stuff their junk mail in their rubbish bag rather than recycling it and we?re trying to encourage people to recycle as much as possible.?

?

According to Letterboxer, an anti-junk mail organisation, recycling is not a sustainable solution. Paper can only be recycled five to seven times before the wood fibres become too damaged.

?

Sylvia Devlin, stakeholder relations manager at the Marketing Association, does not believe advertising mail has a negative environmental impact.

?

?We believe it?s a bit of a red herring.?

?

In the United States 5,600,000t of advertising material ends up in the country?s landfills each year.

?

Devlin says the exact number of pieces of junk mail delivered in New Zealand each year is unavailable.

?

?The numbers of catalogues and mailers have been increasing [in the past 10 years] but the size of them has generally been decreasing.

?

?We do know the cost of delivery is around $80 million per year. Unaddressed mail is the largest marketing expense for most New Zealand retailers and it is because of its effectiveness.?

AIDS Council PSAs Use Foursquare Reference Brilliantly To Sell ...

These new PSAs for the AIDS Council, put together by the McCann Worldgroup Helsinki ad agency, equate getting busy to checking in on Foursquare.

A heterosexual couple touch each other and get undressed; right before he pulls off his skivvies, a map icon pops up with the info, ?Cathy Mills and 34 others were here.? Oh, snap. Imagine? ?You have ousted Jenny as Mayor of Brandon?s junk.?

PLACES for men (english) from McCann Worldgroup Helsinki on Vimeo.

There?s also a version where the woman starts to take off her panties and the alert reads, ?Ryan Smith and 19 others were here.? Of course, as Rebecca Cullers points outon AdFreak.

PLACES for women (english) from McCann Worldgroup Helsinki on Vimeo.

The main problem I see is that the ads play off fear and contribute to the stigma of sexual promiscuity. We should take care to remember that while your number of partners may increase your chances of getting an STD, it only takes one. Or none, if you?re born positive.

While it?s true that the ads can be seen as slut-shamey, (and reminiscent of war propaganda putting the blame on women), it?s still a pretty clever way to speak to the current generation about sex. Nobody wants to unlock the chlamydia badge.

Plants provide accurate low-cost alternative for diagnosis of West Nile Virus

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? While the United States has largely been spared the scourge of mosquito-borne diseases endemic to the developing world -- including yellow fever, malaria and dengue fever -- mosquito-related illnesses in the US are on the rise. One pathogen of increasing concern in the U.S. is an arbovirus known as West Nile.

Now Qiang "Shawn" Chen, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute and a professor in the College of Technology and Innovation has developed a new method of testing for West Nile, using plants to produce biological reagents for detection and diagnosis.

The new research, conducted by Chen and his colleagues at the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology recently appeared in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology.

"One critical issue in WNV diagnosis concerns the difficulty of distinguishing WNV infection from other closely related diseases, such as St. Louis encephalitis and dengue fever, due to the cross-reactivity of antibodies among flaviviruses," Chen says. "It is important to develop better diagnostic tools with enhanced accuracy for both treatment and diagnostic purposes."

Thus far, the 2012 outbreak of West Nile in the United States is on track to be one of the worst on record. According to the Center for Disease Control, 48 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes as of October 9th of this year.

To date, 4,249 cases of West Nile virus disease have been reported in humans, including 168 deaths. Of these cases 2,123 (50 percent) appeared in the more severe or neuroinvasive form of the disease, causing meningitis and encephalitis, while 2,126 cases were classified as non-neuroinvasive.

These figures represent the highest number of West Nile cases reported to the CDC since 2003, with nearly 70 percent reported from eight states: Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Dakota, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Over a third of total cases have been reported from Texas.

The alarming upswing in West Nile cases coupled with their broad geographic distribution demand new techniques for both diagnosis and treatment. Chen and his colleagues have been exploiting the power of plant biotechnology to achieve these goals.

Earlier, Chen's group developed the first successful plant-derived therapeutic to combat West Nile post-infection, reporting their results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. The current study advances efforts to create a diagnostic test for West Nile that will overcome barriers of existing methods, including limited accuracy, prohibitive cost and scalability.

In nearly all cases, West Nile is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire the virus after feeding on infected birds. The virus then migrates to the mosquito's salivary glands, from which it may be injected into humans and animals. There, it can multiply and produce characteristic symptoms of West Nile disease. These may present as flu-like malaise including fever and chills, headaches, fatigue and pain in muscles and joints. Symptoms typically last three to six days, but may persist for weeks.

In around 1 in 150 WNV cases, individuals develop infections of the brain (encephalitis) or surrounding tissue (meningitis), often producing severe headache, fever, stiffness, confusion, convulsions, coma, tremors, muscle weakness and paralysis. Those with neurologic involvement may require weeks of hospitalization and may suffer permanent health effects including muscle weakness and paralysis. Around 10 percent of people with WNV encephalitis die.

Faced with the growing threat of mosquito-borne epidemics, researchers like Chen stress the necessity of developing rapid, low-cost platforms for diagnosis of West Nile. Traditionally, cell cultures from serum, cerebrospinal fluid or tissues have been examined but the short viremic phase and low viral count of WNV in blood and spinal fluid limit the sensitivity and accuracy of such tests. Protein-based methods like ELISA have become standard tests for West Nile, yielding better results but at considerably higher cost and with limited scalability.

In the current study, plants were exploited for their ability to produce large volumes of proteins that can be used for diagnostic testing. As Chen explains, proteins produced in this way traditionally require a lengthy time period before transgenic plant lines can be established. By contrast, the new method, which makes use of plant viral-based vectors like Tobacco Mozaic Virus and Gemini Virus, relies on the ability of plants to transiently express particular target genes, yielding the desired protein in 1-2 weeks.

The technique provides the speed and flexibility of a bacterial gene expression system while permitting the posttranslational modifications of proteins afforded by mammalian cell culture approaches.

Chen's group used plant transient expression systems to produce two varieties of protein reagents useful for the detection and diagnosis of WNV -- one a recombinant antigen and one a monoclonal antibody. High expression levels of both reagents were observed in two kinds of plants: Nicotiana benthamiana (a close relative of tobacco) and lettuce. The two reagents may be readily purified to greater than 95 percent and retain their native functionality and specificity.

The production of plant-derived antigens and monoclonal antibodies offers an attractive alternative to the use of mammalian, insect or bacterial cell cultures and demonstrates the capability of plants to provide accurate and flexible diagnostic reagents not only for WNV but a broad range of arboviruses affecting human health.

"Our test will improve the accuracy of diagnosis, leading to the proper treatment of patients affected by WNV," Chen says. "The plant-derived monoclonal antibody we examined is not only low-cost, but highly specific for WNV antigen and does not recognize antigens from other flaviviruses." Chen further notes that application of this research will ultimately allow a broad range of WNV surveillance capabilities, from clinical diagnosis to global distribution patterns in wild bird and mosquito populations.

West Nile Facts

The West Nile Virus (WNV) is an arbovirus belonging to the Flavivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family

Mosquitoes that have acquired the virus from infected birds transmit WNV.

First identified in the Eastern Hemisphere and widely distributed in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, WNV entered the Western Hemisphere in 1999, via New York City.

Since its American debut, WNV has infected over 30,000 people with severe forms of the disease, with an untold number of additional cases remaining undiagnosed.

Infection with WNV can be asymptomtic or can lead to West Nile fever or severe West Nile disease.

Around 20 percent of people who become infected with WNV will develop West Nile fever, with symptoms including fever, headache, exhaustion and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and swollen lymph glands. The illness can last from a few days to several weeks.

The symptoms of severe WNV disease -- also known as neuroinvasive disease, including West Nile encephalitis or meningitis or West Nile poliomyelitis -- include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, and paralysis.

Approximately 1 in 150 people infected with WNV develop a more severe form of disease. While serious illness can occur in people of any age, those over 50 as well as individuals with compromised immunity (including transplant patients) are at the highest risk for severe illness following WNV infection.

The incubation time for WNV is typically 2 to 15 days. It is believed that infection confers lifelong immunity to the virus.

This year (2012) has seen a serious uptick in West Nile cases and will go on record as among the most severe in terms of case numbers.

A mild winter and a hot, dry summer may have contributed to the rapid spread of WNV across the U.S. this year. Climate change has been implicated as a factor exacerbating the spread of WNV.

The susceptibility to severe symptoms of WNV disease appears linked to genetic traits. Further, advanced age is one of the primary risk factors for severe neurological disease, long-term morbidity and death.

Plant production for diagnostic protein reagents may easily be scaled up to suit existing need, as in the case of a sudden WNV epidemic.

Plants are ideal protein bioreactors, due to their capacity to produce large volumes or proteins at low cost and their ability to make appropriate posttranslational modifications of proteins.

Currently, there is no vaccine against WNV, nor effective therapeutics approved for human use. The best tactics of prevention are:

  • Cover exposed skin with long pants and long-sleeved shirts, particularly during early morning or evening hours when mosquitoes are most active
  • Use insect repellent
  • Keep window screens in good repair
  • Try to reduce or eliminate areas of standing water where mosquitoes breed, including bird baths, wading pools, tire swings, etc

Lady Liberty?s crown reopens to visitors this weekend

7 hrs.

For one of the best views of New York, you have to get inside a great lady?s head.

Starting this weekend, it?s possible again as the Statue of Liberty crown reopens to the public on Sunday after a year of renovations. Visitors seeking magnificent vistas of the Big Apple and a glimpse of the famous monument?s inner workings are already snapping up tickets online.

?It?s an experience that stays with you for your entire lifetime,? said Chris Heywood, a spokesman for New York City?s official tourism agency NYC & Company, who still remembers making the climb as a child.

?The Statue of Liberty remains one of the city?s most iconic attractions and there certainly will be a pent up demand for visitors to want to go up and see the crown.?

The renovations promise better access and safer conditions. There are two new staircases, a new elevator inside the pedestal and a lift that will take visitors who are mobility impaired higher into the monument than ever before, said Mindi Rambo, a spokeswoman for the National Parks of New York Harbor.

?For the first time, people in wheelchairs will be able to go up to the top of the pedestal and actually see into the statue, whereas before, the highest level that they ever really got to was the museum level,? Rambo said.

?The lift is brand new, we?ve never had that before and we?re very excited about it.?

There is no elevator service from Lady Liberty?s feet to her head, so visitors must still go up a double spiral staircase to reach the crown. Official pamphlets warn it?s a strenuous journey, but Heywood recalled that it feels short ?when you?re looking forward to a view that?s stunning.?

It takes adults up to 20 minutes to make the climb depending on whether they stop to examine the statue?s inner architecture and copper skin, Rambo said.

?You can see the folds of the robe, the interior of the statue, and many people find that fascinating. They stop to take photos and point things out to their kids like, ?Oh, that looks like the back of her heel,?? Rambo said.

Once at the top, only 10 adults can fit inside the crown, a space that?s much smaller than people expect, Rambo added. Visitors often tell park rangers that they have come because they remember making the trip as a child and want their kids to have the same experience.

?I think part of that is just driven by the ability to say that they have made that climb and to look out into the harbor and, I suppose in a way, to look back in time to when people came on the big steam ships,? Rambo said.

Archival video:TODAY at the Statue of Liberty
Archival video:?Climb to the crown of Lady Liberty

The crown will be open each week from Thursday through Sunday. If you?d like to visit, you must make a reservation through Statue Cruises ? the monument?s ferry transportation provider.

Tickets became available on October 1 and sales have been brisk: just a few dates in December remain available for 2012.

This is the second time in recent years that the National Park Service is reopening the statue?s crown. The attraction was closed after the 9/11 attacks for security reasons and then reopened on July 4, 2009.

The chance to make the climb will give travelers just one more reason to visit New York, which is on track to set another record year for tourism, Heywood said.

Sunday?s crown reopening also coincides with the 126th anniversary of the statue?s dedication.

NBA to change All-Star ballot, eliminating center
By David Aldridge, TNT Analyst
Posted Oct 23, 2012 10:23 PM - Updated Oct 23, 2012 11:31 PM

The NBA is finally doing something about the Duncan Dilemma.

The league will announce Wednesday a change to its All-Star ballot that will, for the first time, allow fans to vote for three undefined "frontcourt" players instead of having to vote for two forwards and a center. With more and more teams playing smaller than in the past, the definition of "center" was becoming increasingly difficult -- not to mention finding enough quality big men for whom to vote.

For years, for example, the Spurs have listed Tim Duncan as a power forward, even though everyone on earth knew he was their starting center. And so when it came to All-Star balloting, Duncan would take up a forward spot in a very crowded field of Western Conference stars instead of his logical spot in the middle. This was good for Duncan, who surely would have made his 13 All-Star teams anyway, but it often cost another forward a shot.

The league decided to make the change after the NBA's Competition Committee agreed to the move at its meeting last month, VP of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson said Tuesday evening.

"It makes sense," Jackson said. "It made sense to our Competition Committee. Having a center is the only specific position that was singled out on the ballot. It just seemed a little outdated and didn't represent the way our game has evolved. By the same token, it also affords the same opportunity, if you have two good centers in a given year, pick 'em both. They both can be selected. Which is impossible right now."

That would be good news for players like Boston's Kevin Garnett and Miami's Chris Bosh, nominal forwards who are now playing center for their respective teams. Under the old rules, Garnett and Bosh would have been in the center category with the likes of Philadelphia's Andrew Bynum, Atlanta's Al Horford and Indiana's Roy Hibbert. Now, any of them can be selected as a "frontcourt" player.

"It was something that we originally thought made some sense, but we didn't want to make a decision in a vacuum, of course," Jackson said. "We ran it by the Competition Committee and they thought the idea made some sense ... it gives the fans some flexibility while keeping competitive balance."

The league will debut the 2013 All-Star ballot on Nov. 13. Players are selected for the ballot by a committee of national media who cover the NBA on a regular basis. The 2013 All-Star Game will be Feb. 17 at the Toyota Center in Houston.

************************************************** ***********************

God I hate how the league has "evolved". I long for the days when true big men roamed the paint, oh wait no I don't we have one & now possibly two right here.

So suck it NBA, you may keep us out of the all-star game but I have a feeling our team will be p!ssing in the corn flakes of many of your fans teams.

Card Connection Franchisees Grow Business by Over 30%

October 24, 2012 // Franchising.com // Leading greeting card publisher and franchisor, Card Connection, has announced its franchisees for Hereford and Stratford, Dave and Di Tudor have grown their business by 31% in the past six months. The couple now supply Card Connection?s extensive range of quality greeting cards and accessories to more than 300 stores across their franchise territory.

?The past year has seen an increase in sales of 18% for Dave & Di Tudor?s franchise and this has accelerated to more than 30% in the last six months,? explains Michael Johnson, managing director, Card Connection. ?The growth has been due to servicing additional national Card Connection accounts including Spar and Dave?s Discount stores but also new independent retail customers where Dave and Di have been able to offer better merchandising and display deals. The couple have also worked hard, supporting all Card Connection?s ranges within all the outlets they supply and this is really starting to pay off!?

?We joined Card Connection in 2006 and have been focused on growing the business,? confirms Di Tudor. ?Dave is from a farming background so is not afraid of hard work. He will always go the extra mile to make sure our retailers are happy. We have also invested in new equipment to upgrade displays which have resulted in more sales as well as ensuring the full range of greeting cards, Party accessories, bottle bags and wrap are supplied to as many stores as possible.

?Our Card Connection business development manager, Andy Bull, has also been really supportive when it comes to work in the field,? continues Di Tudor. ?He will think nothing of traveling several hours to accompany Dave for an early start on the Welsh Borders on a Monday morning and this has really helped us reap the rewards on the new business front.?

Card Connection?s franchisees use a proven system to place quality greeting cards and gifts in retail outlets on a ?consignment? basis. This means the stock and display equipment are installed on free loan to the retailer. This is one step beyond ?sale or return? as Card Connection customers never have to buy the stock initially, only paying for what they sell. Card Connection?s award winning merchandising service provided to retailers by local franchisees has proved popular with retailers all over the UK and Ireland including Card Connection?s key national accounts such as Spar, Nisa, Supervalue, Centra, Costcutter, Mace, Londis, Total and Shell.

Card Connection is part of UK Greetings, which is a subsidiary of the largest publicly owned greeting card publisher in the world and has limited vacancies for franchisees who are keen to run an expanding business. Suitable candidates would ideally have some management experience as, once established, and depending on the size of the territory, they could be expected to employ a small team, operate a small warehouse and have several liveried vans on the road.

Since the franchise network in the UK is complete, the available opportunities now consist of acquiring an already-established territory from an existing franchisee. These vary in price according to their level of development, but start at ?20k (+stock) with earnings potential in excess of ?50k per annum.

For further information see: www.card-connection.co.uk

About Card Connection

Card Connection is one of the UK?s most successful card publishers and is the market leader in the franchised distribution of greeting cards.

The company was established in 1992 and became a Full Member of the British Franchise Association in 1995. It now distributes greeting cards to around 15,000 outlets through its network of 71 franchisees. www.card-connection.co.uk

Inchworm Chronicles: All Women are Daughters of God

Do you ever wonder what your relationship, as a woman, is to God??

Who are we and who are we meant to become? What is our purpose and our destiny?

All women are daughters of God, and as such we each have divinely inherited qualities and a unique purpose in life. I rejoice to be a woman and cherish the opportunities to express my femininity and learn to be more loving by serving those around me in my family, community or even online.

?Jesus has a special place in his heart for women. Some of his best friends were women. He was quick to bless and teach and honor the women in his life, especially his mother, Mary.

"The world's greatest champion of woman and womanhood is Jesus the Christ."

--James E. Talmage in Daughters in My Kingdom, page 3

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that I belong to has an organization for women called the Relief Society. It is the oldest organization of its kind in the world. The motto for the Relief Society is "Charity Never Faileth." (1 Corinthians 13:8). All women who are members of this church are also members of the Relief Society. Women of other faiths who attend Relief Society are warmly welcomed and encouraged to participate.

The Book, Daughters in My Kingdom, published by the Church, explains more about the history of the Relief Society and what it is all about. A link to the book can be found {HERE}. It is available free to download or read online.

For anyone interested, the most recent General Relief Society broadcast can be found {HERE} to listen or watch for free online. I encourage any woman to view this; I found it absolutely inspiring and I felt the spirit of God as I listened. It is meant to teach and inspire any woman!

What do women in the Relief Society do?

On Sunday, there are classes and also meetings during the month where we women teach one another the gospel of Jesus Christ. We also teach one another informally in our homes during the month. Women also lead the children and young women's organizations within the congregation, working hand-in-hand with the men.

We also learn the things we need to know to care for our families, like cooking or managing finances. The women in the congregation take care of food for funerals, meals for families with new babies or those dealing with illness or recoveries from surgery, and any time a family has a need that the Relief Society learns about, the connections are made to the men in the congregation and the help is given. For instance, when families move to the area, people from church volunteer to help load or unload their belongings in their new home! It is truly charity in action.

Just as no two women are alike, I have found that to be true in Relief Society, as well. I have met women of all walks of life: single, married, divorced, mothers of many and some with no children. Some young, some in the twilight of life. Some came from different faiths before joining the church themselves and others who had always been members. The women I have met through Relief Society don't fit any stereotype I am aware of. They give to each other and to those in their communities and the world without a thought of receiving anything in return and in hope of emulating Jesus Christ.

?This organization has been a blessing to me in my life, personally. Allow me to share a few instances of how it has.

Sisters (that is how we refer to each other in the Church, as brothers and sisters) from the Relief Society brought meals when my Mom gave birth to my brothers and sisters and regularly came to visit her to cheer her up and befriend her. That blessed our family because my Mom's mother had passed away before I was born and her only sister lived in another state. Having the Relief Society support her while she was in the middle of motherhood blessed me in that way. It helped her feel loved and remembered, and in turn, she was able to be more loving and kind to us children, as well as meet our physical needs better. My Mom visited other women in the congregation and lifted them as she could, blessing others, and being strengthened herself in the process.

Later, when I was grown and single, I attended church in a different congregation than my family. I did not worry about making friends; I knew I would soon connect with the other sisters in Relief Society. I served in the primary (children's ministry) with other women and learned so much from them and appreciated their friendship in return.

I have such warm memories of the friends I made as I visited with other sisters in their homes each month and others came to visit me. My most memorable visit was in my car between college classes and work! We encouraged each other in each of our real, everyday lives and our testimonies grew stronger because we lifted each other during times of fun and faith and during times of doubt.

I married and moved to another area of town, and once again found myself in another congregation (ward). This time, I felt very new to the married-adult world and was not sure of how I would fit in. Another sister, already having raised her own children, came to know me and was my companion in visiting teaching, a program by which sisters visit one another in their homes monthly and share a scriptural message and offer help as needed.

This sister taught me by her loving example how women care for each other, without affectation or pride. She was confident, cheerful and determined and her strength and kindness reached me at such a crucial time.? As she invited me to accompany her to cheer, serve, and bless the sisters we were assigned to meet, I learned to serve with love and without judgment. I also began to feel like I belonged and what I had to offer was vital for others.

I could tell so many more stories. This same sister and I went together to meet with another sister who lived in a trailer park in a difficult situation, had bad health, and many grandchildren who were dependent upon her. When we discovered the grandaughter of the woman was in a difficult situation within the neighborhood, she notified another woman in the Relief Society. That woman and her husband talked with the grandmother, gathered more information, and they raised the money to send this girl and her siblings to a pacific island to be reunited with their parent. The grandmother also received assistance to help her in the ways she needed. Her burdens were not erased, but certainly made more manageable.

This was such an out-of-the-ordinary experience. It taught me that people are meant to seek out and care for each other, even when it is not convenient or the person in need is not someone whom we would normally choose to associate with. It touched me as to the extent these women cared, enough to do something extraordinary to help others, even when their own lives were busy and hectic.

My heart is full of love for the dear women, the sisters, who overcame depression to make the time to serve, even if it was a loving word for someone else. There was one other sister, with several children and another with special needs, who always made the effort to call me and arrange visits so we could go to meet with a few other sisters in our congregation, to help them. No one knew her situation and what it took for her to make the effort to serve these other women, but I knew, she knew, and most of all, God knew.

Then, there were the sisters who came and ministered to me. When my youngest son, our third child, was in the hospital for pneumonia and he was just a few months old, a dear friend and Relief Society member came and cleaned my home and helped with my children. Others brought meals for our family. My Mom and Mother-in law, who are also members of the Church and Relief Society, helped hold my son in the hospital when I needed to rest and also helped take care of my other children when my husband needed to work. Although it was still a difficult time for our family, it was made easier to bear with their love and help. I could list so many other instances of service and love given at the hands of women who chose to be angels in my life.

I am grateful to be a member of this great organization within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It teaches me how to become more like the Savior by inviting meaningful service on my part. It reminds me of my purpose in life and encourages and teaches me what I need to know and do in order to be following Jesus Christ, in a real-life, everyday kind of way, in the roles I have as a woman: granddaughter, niece, cousin, daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend.

To you who read this post, I invite you to learn more about the organization of Relief Society and consider how it can bless your life and how you can be involved in it, as a way to bless others. I welcome email or comments along this line. May you each be encouraged in the ways you choose to bless others each day, as the unique and loved daughter of God that you are.

Blessings,

?

Flights disrupted at Heathrow and London City airports as another foggy morning causes transport nightmare

  • Heathrow Airport forced to cancel 49 flights
  • Met Office says conditions do not warrant a severe weather warning

By Anna Edwards

Fog and cloud across the UK has left hundreds of travellers stranded this morning for a second day in a row.

Fog affected flights and train journeys as Britain was cloaked in a light fog, but the Met Office said that they were not issuing a severe weather warning as the impact was not widespread.

The poor visibility led to disrupted flights at London City Airport, and 54 flights were cancelled at Heathrow Airport in west London.

A spokesman for Heathrow said: 'Fog and low cloud mean there?s reduced visibility for pilots and air traffic controllers at Heathrow.

'Drivers have to leave extra space in these conditions and aircraft are no different, which makes it impossible to maintain Heathrow?s normal pattern of a plane landing or taking off every 45 seconds.?

'Because Heathrow is full, operating at more than 99 per cent of permitted runway capacity, there are no gaps in the schedule that can be used for delayed flights.

'Unfortunately that makes some cancellations inevitable.

Stansted remained open and operated all flights, despite the adverse weather conditions.

A spokesman said: 'We actually took in an additional 34 diverts from other airports, mainly City, Luton and Southend on Monday.'

On the railways, there were delays to CrossCountry and South West Trains (SWT) services in Hampshire due to a broken-down freight train in the Eastleigh area.

SWT passengers also had to contend with delays due to a broken-down train at Beaulieu Road in Hampshire which led to hold-ups between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst.

On London Midland, passengers were warned to expect possible cancellations due to train crew shortages, while First Great Western services were affected by a broken-down train at Greenford in west London.

On the Underground, there were delays during the rush-hour to Metropolitan and Jubilee line services due to a faulty train at Wembley Park in north west London.

The Met Office said: 'It's mostly misty, cloudy and drizzling. Temperatures are up to 16 degrees and will stay pretty much the same for tomorrow, with lots of cloud.

'There was a severe weather warning yesterday through until this morning. As visibility is not limited to 200 metres and there is not a wide impact, we have not issued another one.'

Foggy days: The Met Office said the weather should clear by the end of the week

The poor weather came as thick mist caused havoc yesterday, forcing flights to be cancelled across the UK's airports.

The affects of the heavy fog was felt across Europe, including in Poland where planes due to land at Warsaw airports were redirected to neighbouring cities or were forced to wait for the fog to temporarily dissipate before landing, airport authorities said.

The Met Office? issued a 17-hour severe weather alert in the South, Midlands and North of England as visibility dropped to 50metres on hills because of the fog.

Famous skylines across the capital were totally obscured by the thick fog, but the weather is expected to warm up before a cold snap greets the country by the end of the week.

GreenWave Reality ships WiFi-aware light bulbs that flick on through motion and smartphones

GreenWave Reality ships WiFi light bulbs that flick on through motion and smartphones, join the 21st centuryWe've seen connected light bulbs before, some more sophisticated than others, but they're rarely as straightforward as GreenWave Reality's just-shipping Connected Lighting Solution. Eco-friendly LED bulbs in the lineup include support for WiFi and are immediately controllable from a smartphone or tablet as soon as they're receiving power. Basics controls like group presets and timed lighting are just the start; if you're not worried about leaving anyone in the dark, the bulbs can respond to motion sensors and only illuminate the rooms that need attention. And while the intelligence isn't new in itself, GreenWave would argue that sheer accessibility gives it an edge, with electric utilities in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden skipping the retail middleman by selling directly. Don't despair if you live in the US: the linked-up lighting is cleared for eventual use by Americans who'd like to save both energy and a trip to the light switch.

In the blink of an eye: Distracted consumers are most likely to remember ads with subtle variations

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Consumers are more likely to remember an ad they?ve seen repeatedly if one element in the ad changes location from one exposure to the next, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

?Consumers are bombarded with thousands of advertisements daily, are increasingly multitasking, and are preoccupied with everyday activities. The likelihood that they will devote their full attention to any one specific message is getting smaller every day. What impact can an ad have if consumers pay virtually no attention to it?? write authors Stewart Shapiro (University of Delaware) and Jesper H. Nielsen (University of Arizona).

Even when consumers pay very limited attention, advertising can succeed through repetition. When consumers are exposed to a print ad, an image of the ad is stored in their memory and this image becomes clearer with each exposure to the ad. As this memory becomes clearer, preference for the ad increases. Notably, this occurs even if prior exposures to the ad are extremely brief and a consumer devotes much of their attention to something other than the ad.

In a series of experiments, the authors found that this effect may actually be enhanced if one ad element such as the brand logo or product depiction changes location within an ad from one exposure to the next. Under conditions of limited attention, making subtle changes to an ad over repeated exposures may in fact be better than repeating the exact same ad or altering more ad elements from one exposure to the next. For instance, a company could create a more effective ad by placing their brand logo in the bottom left corner the first time it is shown, and then placing it in the bottom right corner of the otherwise unchanged ad the next time it is shown.

?Companies are still learning how to make the most of advertisements that are viewed quickly as a consumer searches for something else on a web page or in a magazine. Subtle changes to ads viewed repeatedly can boost advertising effectiveness in increasingly cluttered environments visited by increasingly unfocused consumers,? the authors conclude.

The debate was the last major opportunity for either candidate to appeal directly to millions of voters - especially the roughly 20 percent who have yet to make up their minds or who could still switch their support at the Nov. 6 election.

World hot spots like?Libya?and Iran were likely to figure prominently, with Romney seeking to put pressure on Obama over what the Republican considers weak responses to the killing of the U.S. ambassador to?Libya?on Sept. 11 and Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Swedish 'Stonehenge' may predate English site

A 5,500-year-old tomb possibly belonging to a Stone Age chieftain has been unearthed at a megalithic monument in the shape of a ship called the Ale's Stenar (Ale's Stones). The tomb, in Sweden, was likely robbed of stones to build the Viking-era ship monument.

"We found traces ? mostly imprints ? of large boulders," said lead archaeologist Bengst S?derberg of the Swedish National Heritage Board. "So my conviction is that some of the stones at least, they are standing on the ship setting."

Perched on a seaside cliff in the village of K?seberga stands the Ales Stenar, also called Ale's Stones, 59 massive boulders arranged in the 220-foot (67-meter)-long outline of a ship. Most researchers believe the 1,400-year-old ship structure is a burial monument built toward the end of Sweden's Iron Age. Local legend has it that the mythic King Ale lies beneath the site.

The Ales Stenar megaliths, some of which weigh as much as 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms), have distinctive cut marks similar to ones found at Stone Age sites. So researchers wondered whether the stones were stolen from an even older monument, S?derberg told LiveScience. [ See Photos of Ale's Stones & Tomb ]

In 2006, archaeologists used magnetic sensors and radar to map the area's underground terrain and found a larger circular structure about 541 feet (165 m) in diameter, with a 65-foot by 25-foot rectangle at its heart.

Last week, the team finally dug a small trench through the center of the circle and unearthed the imprints of giant boulders that had been removed long ago. Though the team didn't find a skeleton, the imprints suggested the site was a Neolithic burial chamber called a dolmen ? several upright stones with a horizontal boulder on top in which a body would be placed.

"All of the stones had been taken away. And I would say, most probably they are standing 40 meters away from the dolmen where the ship setting is situated," S?derberg said.

Based on the layout, the dolmen may be up to 5,500 years old ? possibly older than Stonehenge. The large burial chamber likely belonged to a local chieftain or the head of a clan during the Neolithic Era, he said. Because there was very little evidence from the outer ring, the researchers aren?t yet sure what it was used for or whether it?s as old as the dolmen.

Thousands of dolmen sites are scattered throughout Scandinavia, though later civilizations stole many of the boulders to build churches and other structures, he said.

The giant rock monuments suggest that even our Stone Age ancestors had a sense of posterity and permanence, said Magnus Andersson of the Swedish National Heritage Board in an email.

The new tomb also shows that this particular spot, with its dramatic cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea, has inspired people in many different ages, he said.

"The scenic place on the ridge must have attracted people in all times," he said. "It shows that people over a long period build their monuments and perform their ceremonies on the same sites.?

'Defiance' blends basic cable scifi TV, MMO FPS action when it launches in the spring

With shows like Battlestar Galactica, all of the Stargates and even Eureka on ice, where will Syfy go when it runs out of places and/or marginal celebrities to tell ghost stories about? One answer may be a show slated to debut next spring called Defiance, which will depict an Earth populated by humans and aliens alike trying to pick up the pieces after years of war between the two have left the planet in pieces. The twist here is that the show will run along concurrently with a massively multiplayer shooter being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from the makers of RIFT that takes place in the same world. The team behind it has been posting content about the making of both sides of the project recently (check out Massively by Joystiq's coverage for more info), as well as a trailer for the TV show, which you can check out after the break. We're not sure if this will go over with any more of a splash than Syfy's usual Saturday night monster-of-the-week flicks, but at least they're trying. We'll be keeping an eye out for this one in April one way or another because really what else would we do, watch Revolution?

New glow for electron microscopy: Protein-labeling technique allows high-resolution visualization of molecules inside cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? The glowing green molecule known as green fluorescent protein (GFP) has revolutionized molecular biology. When GFP is attached to a particular protein inside a cell, scientists can easily identify and locate it using fluorescence microscopy. However, GFP can't be used with electron microscopy, which offers much higher resolution than fluorescence microscopy.

Chemists from MIT have now designed a GFP equivalent for electron microscopy -- a tag that allows scientists to label and visualize proteins with unprecedented clarity.

"With things that may appear only a few pixels across by fluorescence microscopy -- for example, a mitochondrion -- you can't make out any of the internal features. But with electron microscopy it's very easy to discern the intricate internal structures," says Jeff Martell, a graduate student in chemistry at MIT and lead author of a paper describing the new tag in the Oct. 21 online edition of Nature Biotechnology.

The new tag could help scientists pinpoint the locations of many cell proteins, providing new insight into those proteins' functions, according to the researchers.

Improving on nature

Dubbed APEX, the new tag is similar to naturally occurring proteins that have been tried as imaging labels for electron microscopy. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is one commonly used tag, but it works only in a few compartments of a cell. Other recently developed tags work throughout a cell but are technically challenging to use because they require light to be shined on the sample and oxygen to be bubbled through it.

To improve on these methods, the researchers started with a protein similar to HRP, called ascorbate peroxidase (APX). APX is more versatile than HRP because it can function within a cell's cytosol, in the main cavity of a cell.

Both HRP and APX belong to a class of enzymes called peroxidases, which remove an electron and a proton from other molecules in a process known as oxidation. Every peroxidase has different targets, and one of HRP's main targets is a molecule called DAB, which when oxidized can be visualized with electron microscopy. The researchers genetically engineered APX so that it would also target DAB.

To use this new APEX tag (for "engineered APX"), the researchers deliver, into a living cell, a small ring of DNA containing the APEX gene joined to the gene for the protein they plan to image. The cell then produces the target protein, bound to the APEX protein.

Next, the researchers need to deliver DAB, which is not normally found in cells. This delivery takes place during the process of "fixing," or stabilizing cells, which must be done before they can be imaged with electron microscopy.

When the APEX protein oxidizes DAB, it generates radicals that rapidly clump together into a tarlike polymer. That polymer can be detected through electron microscopy, allowing the researchers to pinpoint the location of the target protein.

Biological question resolved

To demonstrate the usefulness of their new tag, the researchers set out to resolve an open question regarding the location of a calcium channel protein discovered last year. Two research groups identified the protein and reported that it is located within mitochondria, but they had conflicting theories as to its precise location and orientation. Using the new imaging technique, the MIT-led team labeled the protein and determined that it is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and faces into the innermost part of mitochondria, the mitochondrial matrix.

The team also showed that the new tag can label proteins throughout the cell -- not only within mitochondria but also in the nucleus, the endoplasmic reticulum and the cytosol.

Martell and Alice Ting, the Ellen Swallow Richards Associate Professor of Chemistry at MIT and senior author of the Nature Biotechnology paper, invented the new technology. Other authors who helped to test the tag and explore biological applications are Mark Ellisman, Thomas Deerinck and Gina Sosinsky of the University of California at San Diego, Yasemin Sancak and Vamsi Mootha of Harvard Medical School, and Thomas Poulos of the University of California at Irvine.

In current studies, the researchers are working on filling entire cells, such as neurons, with their imaging agent. This allows certain neurons in an electron microscope image to stand out, making it easier to trace the connections they make with other neurons. For that project, the MIT researchers are collaborating with Joshua Sanes, a professor of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University, who says he believes the new labeling technology will be very useful.

"We want to find the exact connections that these cells are making, and APEX is a good way to label cells for electron microscopy. We can label specific types of cells and figure out how they fit into the neural circuitry," Sanes says.

Ting and Martell have filed for a patent on their imaging technology and are now working on making the APEX molecule more stable and better able to bind heme (an iron atom embedded in an organic compound), which is necessary for it to function properly.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

The danger of pointing out bad behavior: retribution (and the community's role in preventing it).

There has been a lot of discussion of Dario Maestripieri?s disappointment at the unattractiveness of his female colleagues in the neuroscience community. Indeed, it?s notable how much of this discussion has been in public channels, not just private emails or conversations conducted with sound waves which then dissipate into the aether. No doubt, this is related to Maestripieri?s decision to share his hot-or-not assessment of the women in his profession in a semi-public space where it could achieve more permanence ? and amplification ? than it would have as an utterance at the hotel bar.

His behavior became something that any member of his scientific community with an internet connection (and a whole lot of people outside his scientific community) could inspect. The impacts of an actual, rather than hypothetical, piece of behavior, could be brought into the conversation about the climate of professional and learning communities, especially for the members of these communities who are women.

It?s worth pointing out that there is nothing especially surprising about such sexist behavior* within these communities. The people in the communities who have been paying attention have seen them before (and besides have good empirical grounds for expecting that gender biases may be a problem). But many sexist behaviors go unreported and unremarked, sometimes because of the very real fear of retribution.

What kind of retribution could there be for pointing out a piece of behavior that has sexist effects, or arguing that it is an inappropriate way for a member of the professional community to behave?

Let?s say you are an early career scientist, applying for a faculty post. As it happens, Dario Maestripieri?s department, the University of Chicago Department of Comparative Human Development, currently has an open search for a tenure-track assistant professor. There is a non-zero chance that Dario Maestripieri is a faculty member on that search committee, or that he has the ear of a colleague that is.

It is not a tremendous stretch to hypothesize that Dario Maestripieri may not be thrilled at the public criticism he?s gotten in response to his Facebook post (including some quite close to home). Possibly he?s looking through the throngs of his Facebook friends and trying to guess which of them is the one who took the screenshot of his ill advised post and shared it more widely. Or looking through his Facebook friends? Facebook friends. Or considering which early career neuroscientists might be in-real-life friends or associates with his Facebook friends or their Facebook friends.

Now suppose you?re applying for that faculty position in his department and you happen to be one of his Facebook friends,** or one of their Facebook friends, or one of the in-real-life friends of either of those.

Of course, shooting down an applicant for a faculty position for the explicit reason that you think he or she may have cast unwanted attention on your behavior towards your professional community would be a problem. But there are probably enough applicants for the position, enough variation in the details of their CVs, and enough subjective judgment on the part of the members of the search committee in evaluating all those materials that it would be possible to cut all applicants who are Dario Maestripieri?s Facebook friends (or their Facebook friends, or in-real-life friends of either of those) from consideration while providing some other plausible reason for their elimination. Indeed, the circle could be broadened to eliminate candidates with letters of recommendation from Dario Maestripieri?s Facebook friends (or their Facebook friends, or in-real-life friends of either of those), candidates who have coauthored papers with Dario Maestripieri?s Facebook friends (or their Facebook friends, or in-real-life friends of either of those), etc.)

And, since candidates who don?t get the job generally aren?t told why they were found wanting ? only that some other candidate was judged to be better ? these other plausible reasons for shooting down a candidate would only even matter in the discussions of the search committee.

In other words, real retaliation (rejection from consideration for a faculty job) could fall on people who are merely suspected of sharing information that led to Dario Maestripieri becoming the focus of a public discussion of sexist behavior ? not just on the people who have publicly spoken about his behavior. And, the retaliation would be practically impossible to prove.

If you don?t think this kind of possibility has a chilling effect on the willingness of members of a professional community to speak up when they see a relatively powerful colleague behave in they think is harmful, you just don?t understand power dynamics.

And even if Dario Maestripieri has no part at all in his department?s ongoing faculty search, there are other interactions within his professional community in which his suspicions about who might have exposed his behavior could come into play. Senior scientists are routinely asked to referee papers submitted to scientific journals and to serve on panels and study sections that rank applications for grants. In some of these circumstances, the identities of the scientists one is judging (e.g., for grants) are known to the scientists making the evaluations. In others, they are masked, but the scientists making the evaluations have hunches about whose work they are evaluating. If those hunches are mingled with hunches about who could have shared evidence of behavior that is now making the evaluator?s life difficult, it?s hard to imagine the grant applicant or the manuscript author getting a completely fair shake.

Let?s pause here to note that the attitude Dario Maestripieri?s Facebook posting reveals, that it?s appropriate to evaluate women in the field on their physical beauty rather than their scientific achievements, could itself be a source of bias as he does things that are part of a normal professional life, like serving on search committees, reviewing journal submissions and grant applications, evaluating students, and so forth. A bias like this could manifest itself in a preference for hiring job candidates one finds aesthetically pleasing. (Sure, academic job application packets usually don?t include a headshot, but even senior scientists have probably heard of Google Image search.) Or it could manifest itself in a preference against hiring more women (since too high a concentration of female colleagues might be perceived as increasing the likelihood that one would be taken to task for freely expressing one?s aesthetic preferences about women in the field). Again, it would be extraordinarily hard to prove the operation of such a bias in any particular case ? but that doesn?t rule out the possibility that it is having an effect in activities where members of the professional community are supposed to be as objective as possible.

Objectivity, as we?ve noted before, is hard.

We should remember, though, that faculty searches are conducted by committees, rather than by a single individual with the power to make all the decisions. And, the University of Chicago Department of Comparative Human Development (as well as the University of Chicago more generally) may recognize that it is likely to be getting more public scrutiny as a result of the public scrutiny Dario Maestripieri has been getting.

Among other things, this means that the department and the university have a real interest in conducting a squeaky-clean search that avoids even the appearance of retaliation. In any search, members of the search committee have a responsibility to identify, disclose, and manage their own biases. In this search, discharging that responsibility is even more vital. In any search, members of the hiring department have a responsibility to discuss their shared needs and interests, and how these should inform the selection of the new faculty member. In this search, that discussion of needs and interests must include a discussion of the climate within the department and the larger scientific community ? what it is now, and what members of the department think it should be.

In any search, members of the hiring department have an interest in sharing their opinions on who the best candidate might be, and to having a dialogue around the disagreements. In this search, if it turns out one of the disagreements about a candidate comes down to ?I suspect he may have been involved in exposing my Facebook post and making me feel bad,? well, arguably there?s a responsibility to have a discussion about that.

Ask academics what it?s like to hire a colleague and it?s not uncommon to hear them describe the experience as akin to entering a marriage. You?re looking for someone with whom you might spend the next 30 years, someone who will grow with you, who will become an integral part of your department and its culture, even to the point of helping that departmental culture grow and change. This is a good reason not to choose the new hire based on the most superficial assessment of what each candidate might bring to the relationship ? and to recognize that helping one faculty member avoid discomfort might not be the most important thing.

Indeed, Dario Maestripieri?s colleagues may have all kinds of reasons to engage him in uncomfortable discussions about his behavior that have nothing to do with conducting a squeaky-clean faculty search. Their reputations are intertwined, and leaving things alone rather than challenging Dario Maestripieri?s behavior may impact their own ability to attract graduate students or maintain the respect of undergraduates. These are things that matter to academic scientists ? which means that Dario Maestripieri?s colleagues have an interest in pushing back for their own good and the good of the community.

The pushback, if it happens, is likely to be just as invisible publicly as any retaliation against job candidates for possibly sharing the screenshot of Dario Maestripieri?s Facebook posting. If positive effects are visible, it might make it seem less dangerous for members of the professional community to speak up about bad behavior when they see it. But if the outward appearance is that nothing has changed for Dario Maestripieri and his department, expect that there will be plenty of bad behavior that is not discussed in public because the career costs of doing so are just too high.

______
* This is not at all an issue about whether Dario Maestripieri is a sexist. This is an issue about the effects of the behavior, which have a disproportionate negative impact on women in the community. I do not know, or care, what is in the heart of the person who displays these behaviors, and it is not at all relevant to a discussion of how the behaviors affect the community.

** Given the number of his Facebook friends and their range of ages, career stages, etc., this doesn?t strike me as improbable. (At last check, I have 11 Facebook friends in common with Dario Maestripieri.)
